1. Do your research
It's important to understand the different properties and have a general idea of each material so you can choose the right fit for your lifestyle and needs. In general:
Marble: Porous and Not very durable, very easy to scratch. People choose marble for its aesthetic appeal rather than its durability. Needs to be sealed every 6-12 months.
Granite: Porous, heat resistant but also easy to scratch. Needs to be sealed every 6-12 months.
Quartz: Non-porous, not resistant to heat. Very durable and easy to maintain, doesn't require sealing.
Dekton: Heat resistant, very durable, non-porous, also very easy to maintain and doesn't require sealing.
2. Consider an undermount Sink
What's so appealing about stone countertops is the ability to do an undermount sink otherwise not possible with laminate. An undermount sink gives a more modern look to the home but also makes it easier to clean and maintain.

3. Picking the right Colour
If you're choosing either granite or marble, it's important to see the entire slab in comparison to the sample. Each natural stone slab varies, and never looks the same. It's recommended you bring the cabinet door and tile so you can get an idea of how they will compliment each other.

4. Edging profile
Considering a more modern style? Give it a contemporary look with an eased edge. Have young children who may bump their heads on the counter? Consider rounding the corners or a rounder edging profile. Aiming for a more traditional look? Consider a different look with a bevel, bullnose or ogee. Wanting a thicker edge? Consider doubling up or even a laminated edge to show off more countertop.
